# Thermoformed POP Displays: Structure, Lead Time and RFQ Guide

Heavy-gauge forming suits curved floor displays, counter components and light box faces; tooling takes about 1–3 weeks. Work backward from launch through samples, production and shipping, and design the split, nesting and insert interfaces before the tool.

## Divide a thermoformed POP display into four component families

Floor displays, counter inserts, shelf components and light box faces need different support and assembly details. Heavy-gauge forming makes the broad curved body; an in-house thin-gauge shop can supply matching merchandise inserts. Separate those components in the drawing and bill of parts. 方宇（FUNYO） can form a single heavy-gauge part up to 2600 × 1600 × 600 mm (102.4 × 63.0 × 23.6 in), so larger concepts start with a split arrangement.

For a floor tower or promotional island, identify how merchandise is loaded and removed, where each shelf transfers its load, and how the base supports the structure. A smooth curved shell defines appearance, while shelf contacts and supports define the load path. Approve the sample with merchandise in its intended positions, including the changing arrangement as products are removed.

Counter displays need both a locating pocket and access for the shopper's hand. Product shape, label direction and refill direction determine the tray openings and backboard. Draw the heavy-gauge body and thin-gauge insert separately against common merchandise datums. A packaging change can then be traced to the insert pocket, its locating interface or the display body.

Shelf and rack components need lips, support locations and clear installation access. Light box faces need an illuminated area and a mounting flange distinct from the surrounding frame. List the frame, fasteners and electrical parts separately. The [POP display and light box product series](/en/products/displays-signage) shows these component families without treating a complete retail installation as a single plastic part.

## Work back from launch; enter 1–3 weeks only for tooling

A launch schedule needs inputs, outputs and a decision owner at each milestone. FUNYO heavy-gauge tooling takes about 1–3 weeks. Design freeze, sample approval, production, transport and store installation need project-specific durations. Tooling starts from the approved drawing, material and forming direction, rather than from an unapproved styling image.

| Milestone | Input | Output | Decision owner | Weeks required |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Design freeze | Product dimensions, display layout, finish sample | Approved drawing and bill of parts | Brand and structural designer | |
| Tooling | Frozen drawing, material, forming direction | Tool ready for sample forming | Designer and tool supplier | 1–3 |
| Sample approval | Formed sample and merchandise or size samples | Approved sample and change list | Brand and purchasing | |
| Production | Approved sample, quantities, packing specification | Inspected and packed components | Purchasing and producer | |
| Transport | Packed dimensions, quantities, destination | Goods at the named destination | Purchasing and logistics | |
| Store installation and launch | Parts, hardware list, assembly drawing | Display ready for merchandise | Store or installation lead | |

Start with the date merchandise must be displayed, then obtain installation, receiving and transport requirements from the people doing that work. Arrival at a distribution center and arrival at a store can be different milestones. A warehouse may sort components, while a store may accept only complete installation kits. Write the named destination and receiving condition in the output column before assigning a duration.

Sample approval includes merchandise fit, stability, appearance and assembly. Get the real product or a dimensional sample to the sample location and appoint one person to consolidate comments. Separate approvals for shape, finish and packing can reopen the same drawing unless the change list identifies which sample region and drawing revision each decision affects.

Packing belongs before design freeze. A fully formed shell may be easy to visualize but difficult to pack, move through a store entrance or install behind a counter. A late transport constraint can change both the forming tool and the joining flange. Make a packing trial part of the sample output, with the component arrangement and protection shown on a packing drawing.

**Illustration** — Only tooling is assigned 1–3 weeks; enter other durations for the project.

Leave cumulative weeks and latest start dates blank until the milestone durations are agreed. Add the required weeks backward from launch, then calculate each latest start date as launch date minus cumulative weeks multiplied by 7 days. If a design or packing change affects a milestone, update that duration and recalculate the earlier start dates. Keep the carrier’s transport duration and receiving conditions beside the schedule so the date calculation matches the actual delivery plan.

## Specify sheet, finish and finished-wall requirements together

FUNYO's heavy-gauge sheet options for project evaluation are ABS, PC, PVC, PETG and PP. In-house sheet production covers ABS and PET/PS. Keep the chosen material, starting thickness, color and finish sample in the same specification. Starting sheet is available up to 15 mm (0.59 in); the formed wall varies with depth, curvature and stretching.

A broad formed component can connect a curved face, corner and side panel. Put the assembly seams where tooling release, shipping and service access allow them. Mark directional texture on the drawing, and compare adjoining color samples from the intended viewing direction. A color name alone leaves gloss, texture and visible cut edges undefined.

The body and merchandise insert perform different jobs. The body establishes the outside form and attachment interfaces; the insert locates the product at its actual contact surfaces. Specify merchandise weight, support points and refill direction. Check packaging variation and label orientation with the sample. The [sheet-material guide](/en/guides/thermoforming-materials-guide) helps assemble these selection inputs without choosing a grade by material name alone.

Describe any additional finish by visible zones and an agreed sample. Put painting, printing, film or other surface work into the requested scope, identifying the party responsible and the condition supplied. Keep color approval distinct from structural approval so quotations cover comparable components, surfaces and assembly work.

## Buy a light box face with an installation and lighting brief

A light box face is a plastic cover with a defined mounting interface. Lighting uniformity also depends on the source arrangement, spacing and the cavity behind it. Propose materials from the confirmed ABS, PC, PVC, PETG and PP options; transmitting and diffusing grades are confirmed by project. Supply the lit target, unlit appearance, illuminated zone and viewing direction together.

**Illustration** — Double-sided light box

Show the mounting flange in section: where the frame retains it, where fasteners pass and how the face is removed. Dimension the frame interface from common datums rather than from every point on the decorative curve. Screen or switch openings also need surrounding support and a defined cable path.

State who supplies and installs the LEDs, brackets and power supply, who connects wiring, and who accepts the finished electrical assembly. Use a bill of components so the parties can check the same assembled lighting and attachment condition. Include face protection during shipping, replacement access and the route to the power supply in the assembly information.

## Design the shipping split and store assembly before the tool

A display can ship as separate components when its joining and protection details are designed that way. For a capsule-shaped display, consider side shells, top, shelves and base individually. Release direction affects the shell split; joining flanges and access for store tools affect the installation sequence. Put appearance seams, shipping splits and service access on the same assembly drawing.

A nesting proposal needs support points, surface protection and a decision about whether inserts travel separately. Trial-pack the sample with the proposed separators. Record the parts per box, padding positions, lifting direction and kit identifiers. Use identical component names on packing and installation drawings, so the receiving team can match each shell to its hardware.

Installation instructions should show the assembly order and tool access before merchandise is loaded. Identify when the insert, backboard and base are installed, and how left/right or front/back pieces are distinguished. Use the sample installation to check the instructions themselves, including access around the finished display. An attractive empty assembly photograph leaves those actions unresolved.

The photographs marked Reference show similar products to explain component shapes; they are not FUNYO delivery cases. Use the shelf, insert, backboard and support relationships as visual inputs, then specify the geometry and merchandise conditions for your own project.

## Put eight inputs into the RFQ so quotations share one scope

An RFQ needs the merchandise, structure, quantities, dates, sheet, appearance, assembly and acceptance requirements. FUNYO uses 3-axis and 5-axis CNC for tooling, trimming, deburring, holes and slots. Distinguish the formed blank from machined openings and final edges, so the tool and finishing scope can be priced separately.

1. Merchandise: dimensions, weight, orientation and removal action, with real products or dimensional samples.
2. Components: body, insert, face, base and mounting hardware, with the joining interfaces identified.
3. Quantity: initial purchase, replenishment pattern and the quantity for each variant.
4. Dates: launch, receiving destination, installation owner and the approvals still outstanding.
5. Sheet: material, starting gauge, color, texture and transparent zones.
6. Appearance and finishing: visible surfaces, cut edges, holes, slots and finish samples.
7. Assembly and shipping: splits, packing trial, nesting and ownership of each connection item.
8. Acceptance: merchandise fit, critical interfaces, appearance master and final approval owner.

Turn each input into a quotation question, such as whether the insert is included, who supplies fasteners or which fixture changes when an opening moves. Send the same bill of parts to each supplier and map quoted rows to the body, insert and installation items. The [thermoforming RFQ checklist](/en/guides/thermoforming-rfq-checklist) provides a fuller working form for these inputs.

The final price comparison should retain exclusions beside the component they affect. A body-only quotation and a packed installation kit contain different work. If an alternative changes the joining method or insert material, ask for that change against the same component row, then compare the sample and packing consequences before accepting the replacement.

## When should you choose paperboard, metal or injection molding instead?

For short promotions dominated by flat graphics and purchase price, compare paperboard displays first. For heavily loaded shelves and the main structural frame, compare metal construction. Where geometry is stable and demand is large, obtain an injection-molding quotation for the same parts and use the [thermoforming break-even method](/en/guides/thermoforming-vs-injection-molding-break-even). Quantity supplies an input to that calculation rather than a universal switching point.

Separating the decorative surface, load-carrying structure and product locator makes mixed construction easier to describe. A metal frame may carry the merchandise, a plastic shell establish the appearance, and an insert position the product. Specify their interfaces and acceptance separately, then compare the complete displayed, packed and installed state rather than one plastic component's processing price.

## Send the launch plan with the component drawings

Fill in the launch date and receiving destination, then attach merchandise dimensions, finish samples, the bill of parts and an assembly drawing. FUNYO responds within 4 hours and provides a suitability assessment and comparison quotation within 2 working days. Keep tooling, sample approval, production and transport as separate scheduled outputs.

Use the [display and light box product series](/en/products/displays-signage) to identify the parts, then send the completed CSV and drawing revision through the [project inquiry](/en#contact). List the surface and assembly items requiring a response. A common schedule lets design, purchasing, logistics and installation identify the affected component and approval whenever the drawing changes.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does a thermoformed POP display take?

Tooling takes about 1–3 weeks; design freeze, sample approval, production and transport depend on the project. Supply the launch date, quantity, receiving destination and drawing status, then assign an owner and duration to each milestone in the timeline.

### How large can a thermoformed display component be?

FUNYO’s maximum single heavy-gauge part is 2600 × 1600 × 600 mm (102.4 × 63.0 × 23.6 in). Send the overall and split drawings with merchandise weight, joining positions and shipping requirements to define each formed component.

### What materials can be considered for light box faces?

Propose a material from ABS, PC, PVC, PETG and PP; light-transmitting or diffusing grades are confirmed by project. Provide lit and unlit appearance targets, illuminated zones, mounting-flange details and the party responsible for the light source in the RFQ.

### Can thermoformed displays be ordered in small batches?

Quantity is confirmed by project. Send initial demand, quantities by variant, replenishment plans, dimensions and appearance requirements. Identify tooling, inserts, finishing and packing separately so the quotation reflects the actual supplied components and the requested batch.

### Can a display be dismantled for shipping?

Yes, by planning the split, nesting and joining edges during design. List the parts per box, surface protection and store assembly sequence, then trial-pack and assemble the sample to check tool access and the hardware list.
