# Thermoformed Marine & Sports Parts

Big shells for rides and leisure gear, in one piece, with fewer seams.

Thermoformed Marine & Sports Parts are shaped from heated plastic sheet. FUNYO forms single parts up to 2600 × 1600 × 600 mm from sheet up to 15 mm; housings commonly use 8–10 mm. Forming tools take about 1–3 weeks and cost under 1/10 of a comparable injection mold.

- **Max. part size**: 2600×1600×600 mm — L × W × H, formed in one piece
- **Max. sheet thickness**: 15 mm — 8–10 mm is typical for housings
- **Tooling lead time**: 1–3 weeks — vs. about 6–10 weeks for a comparable injection mold
- **Tooling cost**: \<1/10 — of a comparable injection mold

- **Large curves**: Up to 600 mm deep in one piece
- **Fewer seams**: One-piece parts mean fewer joints
- **Small batches**: Tooling in about 1–3 weeks

## Thermoformed parts for marine, sports & recreation

Leisure and sports equipment parts that suit heavy-gauge thermoforming:

- Amusement rides
- Sports and fitness equipment
- Boat fittings
- Leisure equipment

### Ride and entertainment shells

Large curved shapes in one piece, color approved to a master sample.

### Sports and fitness covers

Covers, guards and panels, with openings cut to the component drawings.

### Boat fittings and cockpit parts

Cockpit panels, storage lids and fitting housings; watertightness and passenger requirements stay with the complete boat.

### Leisure equipment bodies

Upper and lower shells formed separately and joined, with joint edges and datums fixed before tooling.

## Thermoforming compared with other processes

For large leisure equipment, agree the division of responsibility first:

| Item | FUNYO delivers | Complete product covers |
|---|---|---|
| Formed contour, trimming and openings | Formed and CNC-machined to drawing | Drawings and datums |
| Support and loads | Matching the frame interfaces | Structural design and testing |
| Seams and watertightness | Joint edges and sealing faces machined to drawing | Sealing process and product validation |
| Passengers, buoyancy, safety | Material data and samples | Product design and certification |

A single shell cannot stand in for validating the complete product.

## Assembly, access and interface design

Mark where people make contact, then compare shell, internal support and joints:

### Stepping and sitting

Mark where people step, sit or hold on; support belongs underneath, and the shell provides the form.

Needed: human contact points

### Internal support

Shell-to-frame mounting points and support spacing are fixed before tooling.

Confirmed: frame and mounting interfaces

### Joints and edges

Joint edges, sealing faces and trim lines are machined to drawing and trial-fitted on samples.

Confirmed: joined sample

## Sheet materials and project requirements

8–10 mm sheet is typical, up to 15 mm.

- **Outdoor sun**: A weatherable grade or surface treatment, sourced per project and checked on samples.
- **Clear parts**: PC or PETG: clear and impact resistant.
- **Impact**: PC or PE, or thicker ABS with stiffening contours.
- **General shells**: ABS is most common; color matched to swatches.

Material, forming route and joining method follow the use conditions; complete-product performance is validated as agreed.

## Factory, CNC trimming and inspection

FUNYO started in precision machining in 2004 and has been thermoforming since 2013. Heavy-gauge forming, CNC trimming and dimensional inspection all happen in our Doumen plant, and we machine our own forming tools, so revisions don't wait on outside shops.

## Thermoforming for marine, sports & recreation: FAQ

A shell model, upper/lower layout or support sketch can all be a starting point. Tell us how it's used and how it's joined.

**Send a drawing. Get an answer in 2 working days.** We respond within 4 hours. Within 2 working days we tell you whether heavy-gauge thermoforming fits, with a side-by-side quote against injection molding. Housing projects of around 3,000 parts a year on an annual supply agreement can apply for a no-tooling-charge evaluation.

### FAQ

#### Can thermoforming be evaluated for marine, sports & recreation at 300–3,000 units per year?

300–3,000 units is a quoting scenario, not a break-even threshold. Compare part size, assembly, material, tooling and unit costs before selecting a process.

#### What size and sheet thickness are available for marine, sports & recreation?

The maximum single part is 2600 × 1600 × 600 mm, with sheet up to 15 mm. Housings commonly use 8–10 mm sheet. Finished dimensions depend on geometry and trimming allowance.

#### Which sheet grades should I specify for marine, sports & recreation?

ABS, PC, PVC, PETG and PP can be formed. PC or PETG can be evaluated for transparent parts. PE, weatherable, flame-retardant and antistatic grades are sourced and sampled for the project.

#### How long does tooling for marine, sports & recreation take?

Forming tooling costs under 1/10 of a comparable injection mold and takes about 1–3 weeks. Comparable injection molds take about 6–10 weeks. Confirm the scope against the drawing and material.

#### What should I send for a 2-working-day thermoforming assessment for marine, sports & recreation?

Send drawings or photos, dimensions, annual and first-order quantities, assembly interfaces and operating conditions. We respond in 4 hours and provide the applicability assessment and comparison quote in 2 working days.
