Thermoforming Guides
Make the drawing, quotationand acceptance criteria comparable.
Read by process choice, materials or inspection. Each guide starts with an answer, then explains the mechanism, conditions and RFQ tools.
Process selection & cost
Compare processes using the same delivery scope and project cost.
- Thermoforming vs Injection Molding: Break-Even CostNew
Break-even quantity equals the difference in one-time costs divided by the difference in delivered unit costs. Match trimming, openings and packaging first, then recalculate for revisions, lifetime demand and timing.
- Thermoformed vs Sheet Metal EnclosuresNew
Use heavy-gauge thermoforming for large curved appearance covers; compare sheet metal for structural loads, grounding and shielding. A metal frame with a formed cover can divide those tasks. Compare the complete delivered assembly, tooling and future changes.
- Heavy-Gauge Thermoforming vs Injection Molding
Heavy-gauge thermoforming shapes heated plastic sheet into parts such as equipment housings; FUNYO tooling takes about 1–3 weeks, versus about 6–10 weeks for a comparable injection mold.
- Thin-Gauge vs Heavy-Gauge Thermoforming for Parts
Choose thin-gauge forming for packaging inserts and handling trays; use heavy gauge for medium-to-large equipment housings. FUNYO’s heavy-gauge starting-sheet range is 6–15 mm (0.24–0.59 in). Use the part’s function, geometry and starting sheet to separate the routes; specify finished wall separately.
Design guidelines
Turn functional needs into workable drawings.
- Heavy-Gauge Thermoforming Design: Draft and WallsNew
FUNYO heavy-gauge housing starting points are male draft ≥3° (≥5° above 200 mm wall height), female draft ≥1°, radii ≥starting gauge and areal draw ratio ≤3:1. Confirm them with the first article.
- Fastening Thermoformed Parts: Inserts and BondingNew
Fasten a thermoformed shell through supported mounting regions, using the frame for structural loads and separate hardware for attachment. Choose reusable metal threads for service access, then validate torque, pull-out behavior and removal on the first article.

Materials
Start with service conditions, then review the sheet grade.
- PC vs PETG: Clear Thermoformed Windows and GuardsNew
Start with PC when impact and heat resistance drive the requirement; consider PETG for milder conditions and easier forming preparation. For either material, define the optical face, scratches, tool marks and viewing conditions, then approve a mounted sample.
- Thermoforming Materials Guide: ABS, PC, PVC & PP
For housings, compare ABS, PC, PVC, PETG and PP against the use conditions; PC and PETG are options to discuss for transparent areas. Specify color, light transmission and fit. Common housing starting sheet is 8–10 mm (0.31–0.39 in).

Quality & inspection
Specify dimensions, measurement conditions and acceptance.
- Cleanroom Thermoformed Trays: Cleanliness SpecsNew
A cleanroom class describes airborne particles: Class 100 is approximately ISO 5 at ≥0.5 μm, not a tray-surface cleanliness grade. Specify air class, surface acceptance and packaging separately.
- Thermoforming Defects: Webbing, Chill Marks & ChecksNew
Assign A, B and C surfaces by visibility after assembly, then agree viewing conditions and defect limits. Trace webbing to folded sheet, chill marks to early contact, and whitening to stretch or stress; check wall condition alongside appearance.
- Large-Part Thermoforming Tolerances: Drawing GuideNew
A published five-axis trim reference is 0.010–0.015 in (0.254–0.381 mm) for reasonably small parts in a rigid, accurate fixture. For large parts, separate tool-contact, free-side and CNC dimensions, with agreed datums and measurement conditions.
Applications
Review housings and trays against their use conditions.
- EV Charger Cover: Thermoforming, Injection or MetalNew
Use heavy-gauge thermoforming plus CNC for medium-to-large curved appearance covers, especially while styling changes remain likely. FUNYO tooling takes about 1–3 weeks. Define the frame, sealing and equipment tests separately, then compare the same delivered scope across processes.
- Large Thermoformed Handling Trays: SpecificationNew
Specify locating surfaces, load paths, stacking and handling interfaces before choosing sheet. FUNYO forms heavy-gauge parts up to 2600 × 1600 × 600 mm (102.4 × 63.0 × 23.6 in). Starting gauge is 6–15 mm (0.24–0.59 in). Validate the tray with its actual load and support arrangement.
- Robot Housing Production: Thermoforming RouteNew
Use 3D printing or CNC models for prototypes, then thermoforming plus CNC for repeat deliveries. FUNYO heavy-gauge tooling takes about 1–3 weeks and costs less than 1/10 of comparable injection tooling. Recalculate injection molding after design freeze and stable demand.
- Thermoformed POP Displays: A Procurement GuideNew
Heavy-gauge forming suits curved floor displays, counter components and light box faces; tooling takes about 1–3 weeks. Work backward from launch through samples, production and shipping, and design the split, nesting and insert interfaces before the tool.
Sourcing & projects
Prepare the information for RFQs and project reviews.
- Thermoformed Automation Trays: Tolerances and ESDNew
FUNYO thin-gauge trays for automated lines are controlled to +0.3 / −0.2 mm. Define handler datums, pocket features, stack release and ESD requirements together.
- Thermoforming Cost: Tooling and Comparing QuotesNew
Thermoforming price depends on sheet input, secondary operations and delivered requirements. Separate tooling and other initial charges from recurring costs, then align drawings, batch quantities, inspection, packaging and shipping before comparing supplier offers.
- Thermoforming RFQ Checklist: Scope and DrawingsNew
Send one controlled revision covering the part, quantity, material and environment, appearance and finishing, acceptance, and delivery. If drawings are missing, start with photos and dimensions; keep each supplier’s assumptions beside its price.
- Thermoforming Samples and First Article ApprovalNew
Heavy-gauge tooling takes about 1–3 weeks; sample approval, revisions and freight are scheduled separately. Freeze the drawing and material, then approve dimensions, wall thickness, appearance and assembly against one identified sample revision.
Basics & glossary
Understand forming and finishing terminology.
- What Is Thermoforming? Vacuum Forming BasicsNew
Thermoforming shapes heated sheet against a tool, then cools and trims it. Single-sided tooling shortens toolmaking and lowers tooling fees. Specify contact face and finishing; FUNYO works with 6–15 mm (0.24–0.59 in) heavy-gauge sheet.
